New Pictures at an Exhibition
Seymour Bernstein

Cat.#10158
$15.00
|
Musicians and critics have referred to New Pictures at An Exhibition as a modern day masterpiece.
Beginning with a preface about the connections between the paintings, poems and music, and continuing
with reproductions of paintings that inspired the music and poetry, Seymour Bernstein considers New
Pictures at An Exhibition to be his most important composition to date. The Reclining Woman is a brooding
, 12 tone piece expressing the grief of the woman in the painting. At the Moulin Rouge has alternating
meter, is waltz-like with can-can quotes. The Dream has improvisatory, dream-like qualities. Mezzetin,
in the painting is playing a Baroque guitar, and the piece is a siciliana with ornamentation. Chez
Chagall is based on Klee's Twittering Machine with whimsical and exhuberant music. The Madonna, arioso
captures the serenity of the painting. Redemption is a slow, melancholy piece with shifting tonality
which reflects the emotions of Erna Freelander when she was escaping Nazi Germany and passing through a
quaint French village. Guernica's music and poetry depict the Basque town in Spain which was earmarked
for saturation bombing destruction by the Germans and contains lamentations reflecting the tragedy and
grief of war. The Epilogue is a peaceful and serene ending.

Fantasy on a Theme by Francisco
Seymour Bernstein

Cat.#10164
$6.00
|
The Fantasy was commissioned by the Music Teachers Association of California. The opening eight note
theme in the left hand belongs to "Balloons," a choral work by Francisco J. Nunez. The piece opens with
descending accented octaves which exuberantly ring out like bells. The middle section wanders darkly
and mysteriously through chromatic passages. The next sections are marked contemplative and fanciful,
finally ending with frenzied sffz octaves and chords. This is an excellent contemporary etude with
similar techniques to some of the Chopin etudes. This piece is "a must" for contemporary festivals.

Lullaby for Carrieanne
Seymour Bernstein

Cat.#10163
$4.00
|
A favorite among performing pianists of all ages, this piece was written to celebrate the birth of a
daughter Carrieann to one of Seymour Bernstein's pupils. With it's Spanish flavor, the piece weaves
around fragments of the well-known nursery rhyme, "Ring Around the Rosy." Seymour Bernstein writes
"freely, a reverie" at the beginning of this four page piece. He takes the short quote of the familiar
children's refrain and weaves it into lovely meandering melodic phrases of varying lengths. Each hand
has wonderful parts to play-arpeggios, double-thirds, and meandering triplets. The piece is based on a
Gb tonal center but goes through temporary shifts to other key areas. This would be an excellent choice
for contemporary music festivals with its unique melodic manipulation.

Trees - Five Hymns and Poems to the Miracles of Nature
Seymour Bernstein

Cat.#10170
$6.00
|
Seymour Bernstein has almost a religious feeling about trees. These pieces express his reverence for
nature's miracles. Each of the delightful poems sets the scene, and the pencil sketches further
enhance the performer's awareness of what the hymn is about. The beautiful music is mostly tonal with
some extended tonalities. The melodies and styles reflect each tree's characteristics. The hymns are
titled: The Young Maple, The Willow, The Magnolia, The Dying Birch, The Sequoias. The Sequoias poem
reads: Majestic pillars, born in ancient times, for all your strength, the blush of modesty; To think
you witnessed all of Sappho's rhymes, and lived when Homer spun his Odyssey. This is an excellent
choice for theme recitals and a good collection of art, music and literature for students.
