This adagio piece is an example of Russian Orthodox choral music. The
dynamic ranges of each brass instrument are beautifully exploited and each voice is essential to the
dramatic harmony. Tschesnokoff (1887-1944) taught music in the Moscow public schools, directed church
choirs and was the conductor for the Moscow State Choir and Academic Choir. He wrote a textbook on
choral conducting and choral technique.
