Symphony #5
first movement
Ludwig van Beethoven
C. Michael Ehrhardt

Cat.# 10103
$6.00
|
The fifth symphony is probably the most popular of Beethoven's symphonies, and in this arrangement
you can recall the sounds of this ingenious work. The first movement is presented in its entirety and poses some
technical and voicing problems that the student can learn to solve. Ehrhardt included historical notes on the symphony
and extensive information on each section of the form. This is a great way for students to learn the orchestral repertoire.

Topiary
Harold Meltzer

Cat.#10104
$4.00
|
Award-winning composer Meltzer is the director of Sequitur, a contemporary music ensemble based
in New York City. This work was commissioned by a California music teacher and is a collection of six short pieces based
on challenging rhythm patterns. Each piece has a clear-cut design or figure, thus the title. The first piece is a theme
and two variations made from repetitions of five 2-note chords. Chains of 2-note chords make up an obsessive accompaniment
in the second piece. The third and sixth pieces constantly change pace through the addition or subtraction of beats of silence
between notes. The fourth piece is very lyrical, and parallel chords dominate the fifth piece.

Cosmic Encounters
Twelve Interplanetary Etudes on the Intervals for the Intermediate Terrestrial Piano
Jon Grief

Cat.#10124
$10.00
|
Grier's objectives for writing these pieces was to provide twelve concert-worthy
pieces in a modern idiom; to have the student develop a basic aural and theoretical awareness of intervals,
and for them to develop some basic techniques of analysis. Each piece emphasizes one of the 12 chromatic intervals.
This is done mostly with melodic materials, though harmonic means are also used. Each piece has an accompanying
page of theory questions and/or exercises about the intervallic relationships, structural elements or motivic
development. Grier asks the student to imagine being a member of the crew on the first manned mission to explore
Titan. As the intervals get larger, their distance from Earth will increase. These pieces would be great for a
cosmic theme recital. They could also be used in a group class with discussions about the intervals. There is an
appendix listing inversions of the intervals. The titles of the pieces are: Countdown, Weightless, Red Storm,
Asteroids, Solar Wind, Chipwatt the Robot, Jovian Moondance, King of the Heavens, Full Tilt, Jewel in the Void,
Computer Chaos, Titan.

Krassimir Miletkov
A distinguished composer from Bulgaria (born 1952), Krassimir Miletkov has written this
wonderful series of solos for piano. There are Schumann-like textures, some folk material, and Romantic
and Contemporary harmonies. The writing is pedagogically sound -- these are terrific recital material.
The compositional craft is first-rate! Country Tramp and The Steam Locomotive are rollicking,
syncopated tunes that middle school and high school students will love to play. Waves and At the
Sea Bottom have shimmering chords, use wholetone scales and quartal chords. The Clown and
The Witch are full of accented surprises, chromatic passages, and descending third passages.
The Ballerina and the Tin Soldier alternates from a graceful waltz uses quintuplets to a more aggressive
type waltz. The two short collections -- Fairy-Tale World and Reminiscences of Childhood --
are descriptive in the most delightful way with much variety in articulation, melodies and textures. Looking
for alternatives to standard literature in collections? These are the ones!
Features: Intermediate Excellent recital material Highly recommended
Duration for all from 1 to 2 minutes.
