WOLFGANG LAMPERT

Wolfgang Lampert was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1954 of then-recent German immigrants who raised their son on a diet of classical and other fine music.

In third grade Wolfgang took up trombone. He played it in various bands throughout his school and college years, in his church’s brass choir, in the United States Collegiate Wind Band during its summer 1972 tour of Europe and Russia, and in Cleveland’s Danube-Swabian Brass Band. In his early teens, he taught himself trumpet. In his mid-teens, his interest shifted to composition. Seeking to facilitate the writing of music, he took up organ under the tutelage of Betty Funk.

Wolfgang studied harmony at Cuyahoga Community College in Parma, Ohio under Joe Howard. He went on to graduate from Cleveland State University in 1978 with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. Thereupon, he moved to Colorado Springs where he secured a job in electronics as well as an organist position at Rock of Ages Lutheran Church. He has served as the sole organist here for most of the years since 1978. In 1980 he married Darlene, who has since been very instrumental in perpetuating the choral music program at the church.

The organ proved to be a useful compositional tool, resulting in the publication of many of Wolfgang’s hymn preludes. MIDI and the computer age accelerated and diversified his musical output and made it possible to write voluminously for an instrumental ensemble that he founded at Rock of Ages in 1995. The ensemble was active until 2000. During this period he wrote many substantial works for this medium. In addition to his organ and instrumental music publications, Wolfgang also has published choral music to his credit.
